H5P Quizzes

What are H5P quizzes?

If you would like to create a formative quiz exercise with H5P there are a few different options as the icons above indicate. The simplest of the H5P quiz options are the Single Choice Set and the Multiple Choice. Both are multiple-choice quiz types but the Single Choice Set can only have one correct answer whereas with the Multiple Choice there is the option to have several correct answers. The Quiz (Question Set) is the more advanced option for a H5P quiz. The Quiz (Question Set) H5P makes it possible to create a quiz which is made up of a variety of question types, including Multiple ChoiceDrag and DropFill in the Blanks, Mark the Words, Drag the Words, True/False and Essay (Short response). Lastly, there is the Summary H5P which can also be used as a quiz type activity. Before choosing which of the H5P quiz types are best suited for an activity, consider what the students are meant to get out of doing the activity and how much time they have to them to spend on it. If you are not quite comfortable with H5P just yet, the Single Choice Set or Multiple Choice might be a good place to begin.

What can a Quiz be used for?

H5P quizzes can be a good way for students to concept-check content. Using H5P quizzes as part of a module in a Blackboard unit site might be useful, particularly for concept checking to see whether or not the students are understanding the self-access content. It may be useful to incorporate a short quiz at the end of a module to stimulate memory or perhaps after an important assigned reading to ensure the students understood what was intended.

When including a quiz type into a module ensure that it is communicated how the activity will assist the students in fulfilling the Unit Learning Outcomes. This may increase the chances that the activity is perceived as meaningful for the students which may in turn increase engagement.

Example (Single Choice Set): Naturopathic Medicine

A Single Choice Set is the most simple of the different H5P quiz types. The Single Choice Set is excellent for concept checking at the end of a module or following a reading. It can also be incorporated into an Interactive Video, Interactive Book or a Course Presentation H5P. In the example below the Single Choice Set has been used on its own in a Naturopathic Medicine unit on Reproductive Health. In this example, the Single Choice Set H5P is used to check understanding of key concepts from the module content surrounding processes related to reproductive health.

Example (Multiple Choice): Biology

A Multiple Choice H5P is similar to the Single Choice Set in appearance, but there are a few significant differences. Contrary to the Single Choice Set, the Multiple Choice H5P  has the option to select more than one correct answer however it also only allows for one question to be included in the entire quiz. It does have the option to include either an image, an audio clip (from a file) or a video (from either a file or directly from YouTube) as a prompt for that question which enables it to be more of an independent activity which is relevant to the module content however doesn't necessarily need to directly refer to previous content like a reading as is the case with the Single Choice Set. In the example below the Multiple Choice H5P has been used in a Biology course on Cells and Molecules to introduce different types of carbohydrates. This activity could have also been created as an Interactive Video H5P. Similar to the Single Choice Set, the Multiple Choice can also be included in either an Interactive Video, Interactive Book or a Course Presentation H5P.

Example (Multiple Choice): Ecosystem Management

Besides from using the Multiple Choice as a quiz it can also be created as a checklist e.g. a module checklist for students to check whether they've fulfilled the Unit Learning Outcomes, a checklist in preparation for a research project/assessment, a checklist for placement, fieldwork or a field trip etc.

In the example below the Multiple Choice H5P has been used to create an end-of-module checklist for a module on Ecosystems and Their Processes to make visible to students whether or not they've acquired the knowledge and skills in this module required to fulfil the Unit Learning Outcomes. If the students click on the "Information" button to the right of the statement, they will be directed to the exact place in the module where they review that content if they need to. The Multiple Choice H5P has the option to enable "Allow logged-in users to resume content" which means that the students' progress will be saved if they begin to fill out the checklist and then need to go back to review content.

Example (Quiz/Question Set): Science

The Quiz (Question Set) H5P is the quiz type H5P with the most different options. The quiz can be used for concept-checking at the end of a module or unit and may assist in encouraging different thought processes due to the different nature of the questions compared to the Single Choice and Multiple Choice questions only. In the example below the Quiz H5P has been used in an introductory Science course to check the students' understanding of some of the concepts introduced in the modules throughout the unit. It is important to note that while the H5P quiz should not be used as a summative (graded) assessment task, it can be a good way to make it visible to students whether they've understood the key components of the unit's content so that they have that advantage before a graded assessment. In this quiz, the question types that have been used are: Multiple Choice (with an embedded video), Drag and Drop, Fill in the Blanks, Mark the Words, Drag the Words, True/False and Essay in that order. The quiz has been created to demonstrate how each of the question types can be used however it is not necessary to include every different question type in a Quiz H5P in the same way that it might be relevant to have several of one or more question types. To choose which question type is best fit for purpose it is essential to first evaluate the purpose of the activity taking into account the Unit Learning Outcomes and any upcoming assessments and/or accreditation requirements.

Example (Summary): Science

The Summary H5P can be used to get the students to identify the correct sequence of a series of events. In the example below, the Summary H5P has been used to get the students to accurately identify the correct sequence of processes involved in the mitosis of a cell for a Biology unit focusing on Cells and Molecules.

Allow logged-in users to resume content

When using any of the H5P quizzes it is essential to tick the box which allows logged-in users to resume content available in the H5P's LTI Settings. This means that students' answers will be saved even if they don't finish the quiz in one sitting.
