Edit an existing H5P object

H5P is a collection of easy-to-use, engaging and responsive interactive digital experiences. This article covers the process of editing a H5P object that has already been created.

Editing H5P objects

After you have created a H5P, it is possible to make further edits from the H5P library, or using the Edit button with a H5P that has been added using the + plus button method.

Editing live H5Ps with resume content enabled

Some H5Ps allow students to save their progress (e.g. interactive videos, course presentations and quizzes).  If allowed logged-in users to resume content is ticked under the H5P LTI settings, student progress will be cleared when edited.

The following error message will be displayed when editing the H5P.

There are two main ways to edit a H5P that has already been created. The video below provides an overview.

Edit within Blackboard

Each H5P located in a Blackboard learning site includes an Edit button (with the exception of H5Ps added using embed code).

  1. Locate the H5P in the Blackboard learning site.
  2. To edit the H5P simply click on the Edit button located above the H5P object.
  3. Make the required changes and then click Save to ensure that any changes are saved.
  4. The H5P will automatically update.

Editing through H5P.com

Editing directly through H5P allows for a much larger editing window, so makes it easier to navigate and make changes.

  1. Login into H5P.com using your SCU credentials.
  2. Once you have logged in, find your H5P by searching the H5P library for the name and/or using filters, or navigate through your library until you find the H5P.
  3. Click on the Pencil icon next to the H5P name to edit it.
  4. Make the required changes and then click Save to ensure that any changes are saved.
  5. Refresh the Blackboard page with the H5P to see the changes.

Cloning a H5P

A clone of a H5P is an identical copy that can be used as a starting point to save time or to allow a H5P to be re-used across multiple unit sites.

Don't overwrite an original H5P

When editing an existing H5P it is easy to accidentally overwrite the original, which can be live in other learning sites! If you are not the original author of a H5P it is a good idea to make a clone to avoid accidentally changing it.

You can also use Shared folders to share H5P with others, which creates a protected read-only copy that can be cloned by all staff.

  1. Login into H5P.com using your SCU credentials.
  2. Once you have logged in, find your H5P by searching the H5P library for the name and/or using filters, or navigate through your library until you find the H5P.
  3. Click the "..." menu, then click Clone.

  4. Enter a new name for the clone. By default, the clone will be called "Clone of ..."

  5. Click on Clone to save the changes and create the H5P clone.

(Please note - it's better to refer to the Online version rather than export, as it's always up to date)
