How do I install EndNote?

The following explains how to download and install the software on your computer.

It is essential that you extract the contents of this zip file before you attempt to run the install program.

This download is for staff and students of SCU only.

The EndNote End user licence agreement must be completed to access the download page and the licence form must be completed annually.

  1. Complete the EndNote End user licence agreement (Chrome) to access the downloads page
  2. Click the applicable EndNote version to download the zip file
  3. Locate the folder with the downloaded zip file and "Extract all" the contents of the zip file
  4. If you do not have an "extract all" option, try viewing the zip file in Windows Explorer or My Computer - Browse to view your downloads and then do a single-click on the zip file - you will see the contents of the zip file in the right pane, do you get an "extract all files" button appearing at the top left of this window? Click this button.
    • Right-click the zip file, look for an "extract all" option and choose where to extract the files to.
    • There are 2 files inside the zip file: En2?Inst.msi and Licence.dat.
The files MUST be fully extracted in order to work properly
  1. In the extracted folder (NOT in the zip folder), double-click the En2?Inst.msi file to start the installation.
  2. After installing EndNote, you can delete the zip file and the extracted folder & contents.

  • If prompted for License Key after installing EndNote, you will need to rerun the install but be sure to look at our installation instructions as the files need to be extracted from the zip file before running the install.
  • See above for complete download instructions, then fill out the Southern Cross University EndNote User Licence Agreement form, and proceed to download.

Follow these steps to help ensure your EndNote library is safe when upgrading to EndNote:

  • If you are new to EndNote and have no existing EndNote library, feel free to start with EndNote but be aware of backward compatibility issues if sharing a library with others who are using EndNote v.9.2 or older. Read more about backing up your library and any customized content files (e.g. output styles, connection files, and import filters).
  • Only one version of the EndNote desktop application can be installed on your computer.
  • Ensure that you backup your existing EndNote library first or make sure it is synchronised to your EndNote online account (if using EndNote Online)

Before upgrading to EndNote 20, ensure that your EndNote X9 is updated right up to the latest version of X9 (X9.3 or above).

  • This will convert your library to a format that will be compatible with EndNote 20. However, it will also convert your library to a version that will not be backward compatible with vX9.2 or earlier. This process cannot be reversed. Read more about Library Conversion and Backward Compatibility here.

EndNote 20 & Mac Compatibility

  • Check current compatibility and system requirements here.
  • From late 2019, EndNote for Mac changed to a 64 bit program and Apple no longer supported 32 bit software. EndNote libraries created in Mac version X9.3.2 and above are no longer compatible with earlier Mac versions or Word versions X9.3.2 or earlier.
  • If you upgraded to EndNote Mac version X9.3.2 or above you can only open libraries in this version or above.
  • If you are using Catalina OS or above, you must upgrade to EndNote 20.
  • You can open libraries created in older versions in the newest version  - they will be converted to the newest format. The libraries will no longer open in earlier versions and this process cannot be reversed.
  • Unsure of the latest macOS version? Check here.
  • Backup your library (compress) before updating/upgrading to a later version of EndNote

Note: If you are still using a Mac with the Apple M1 chip please see the following article EndNote: Apple M1 chip compatibility
