Getting started with eduroam

eduroam allows users from participating institutions to gain secure wireless network access at other participating institutions across Australia and around the globe using the standard username & password they use at their home institution for wireless network access.

eduroam provides a secure wireless connection for staff, students and visitors. Being part of eduroam allows you to visit a participating institution and connect to the internet the same way you do on campus - all without having to request a guest account.

Note: eduroam setup is only required if you wish to connect to the service at another institution. If you would like to just use wireless@SCU on-campus, please visit Connect to Staff & Student Wireless (wireless@SCU)


If you are a student or staff member of Southern Cross University you are able to use the wireless of any Unversity in Australia and NZ with your SCU username and password. 


To help you connect to the eduroam service, please select the device instructions below.

What device do you want to connect to eduroam?

Step 1: When at the external location, connect to the wireless network called eduroam (it will appear with this name at any participating institution).

Step 2: Enter your short username and password.

IMPORTANT: Your username must be in the following format:

username@scu.edu.au

This is different to wireless@SCU, as your username MUST be followed by @scu.edu.au

Step 3: You may see a message that you need to validate the certificate. Click 'OK'.

Congratulations! You are now connected to eduroam. In the future, eduroam will be among your preferred networks and you can connect directly to it, without this guide.

Step 1: When at the external location, connect to the wireless network called eduroam (it will appear with this name at any participating institution).


Step 2: Enter your SCU short username and password.

Step 3: You may see a message that you need to accept our server's certificate. Select Connect.


Step 4:  Your computer is now connected to the network

Congratulations! You are now connected to eduroam. In the future, eduroam will be among your preferred networks and you can connect directly to it, without this guide.

The following step by step process will connect your Mac OSX computer to eduroam. This configuration only needs to be done once - your settings will be saved and you will just need to connect to the eduroam access point in the future.

Step 1: Click on the Apple Menu and then go to System Preferences.

Step 2: Click Network.

Step 3: Click on Network Name and select "eduroam" 

Step 4: Enter your SCU short username and password (leave all other fields as is) and click 'OK'.

IMPORTANT: Your username must be in the following format:

username@scu.edu.au

This is different to wireless@SCU, as your username MUST be followed by @scu.edu.au

Step 6: At the Verify Certificate window, click Trust.

Step 7: You may need to enter the Administrator or Login password to your Mac (The username and password you use when you start up your computer).

Congratulations! You are now connected to eduroam. In the future, eduroam will be among your preferred networks and you can connect directly to it, without this guide.

The following step by step process will connect your iOS device (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch) to eduroam. This configuration only needs to be done once - your settings will be saved and you will just need to connect to the eduroam access point in the future.

Step 1: Go to the Settings Application

Step 2: Tap on Wi-Fi

Step 3: Switch Wi-Fi ON and choose eduroam (it will appear with this name at any participating institution).


Step 4: Enter your SCU short username and password.

IMPORTANT: Your username must be in the following format:

username@scu.edu.au

This is different to wireless@SCU, as your username MUST be followed by @scu.edu.au


Step 5: Click Trust when prompted by the certificate.

Congratulations! You are now connected to eduroam. In the future, eduroam will be among your preferred networks and you can connect directly to it, without this guide.

The following settings are for mobile devices running the Android operating system (version 2 and later). This configuration only needs to be done once - your settings will be saved and you will just need to connect to the eduroam access point in the future.

Due to the many different versions and user interfaces of Android, the following are the general settings for eduroam and may not be specific to your device.

Step 1: From your applications menu, choose Settings.

Step 2: Select Wireless and Networks.

Step 3: Select Wi-Fi Settings.

Step 4: Ensure that Wi-Fi is enabled. Under Wi-Fi Networks will be a list of wireless networks that are available to connect to.

Step 5: Select the network eduroam - a pop up window will appear asking for information.

Step 6: Enter the following:

EAP method: Select PEAP

Phase-2 authentication: Select MSCHAPV2

CA certificate: leave blank

User certificate: leave blank

Please note: some devices will not allow the 'connect' button to be active unless the setting 'CA certificate' is set to 'Do not validate'.

Identity: Enter your SCU Computer Login* username

IMPORTANT: Your username must be in the following format:

username@scu.edu.au

This is different to wireless@SCU, as your username MUST be followed by @scu.edu.au

Anonymous Identity: leave blank

Password: Enter your SCU Computer Login* password

Step 7: Press Connect.

Congratulations! You are now connected to eduroam. (Note the wireless icon that will appear when you are connected to wireless).

The following settings are for mobile devices running other phone operating systems. This configuration only needs to be done once - your settings will be saved and you will just need to connect to the eduroam access point in the future.

Due to the many different versions and user interfaces of common smartphones, the following are the general settings for eduroam and may not be specific to your device. Note: Nokia devices running the Symbian operating system are incompatible with eduroam.

Newer devices automatically detect some of these options.

Step 1: Go to your wireless network configuration settings.

Step 2: Turn on Wi-Fi and connect to the eduroam access point.

Step 3: If prompted, ensure WPA2-Enterprise (or equivalent) is selected for security settings.

Step 4: If prompted, ensure PEAP and MSCHAPv2 are selected for authentication.

Step 5: Use your SCU short username and password to connect.

IMPORTANT: Your username must be in the following format:
