Running a live Kahoot
Congratulations! Having created your first Kahoot you are now ready to run a live Kahoot with your class.
What you will need
- A desktop, laptop, tablet, or mobile device – make sure a supported web browser or the Kahoot mobile app is installed.
- A projector, large screen, or video conference software – display resolution should ideally be at least 1024 x 768. If text or elements on-screen overlap or are too small, try using your browser’s zoom in/out feature.
- A stable internet connection – be sure to test your venue’s internet stability at least a few days before any major event.
Rejoining a Kahoot!
⚠️⚠️⚠️
It's not possible to rejoin with the same nickname and accumulated points after leaving the game (e.g. closing the app or the tab; losing connectivity). Players who rejoin the game need to provide a new nickname and collect points from the beginning.
Getting started
From the Kahoot Home or Library tab you will see your recently created Kahoot.
Simply click the start button to load your Kahoot.
Quiz settings
Before you enter the game mode, you can select from a list of game options that can be accessed via the gear wheel icon on the bottom right corner of the host's (your) screen.
You can review the in-game settings such as show questions and answers, player identifier, characters and lobby music – check the list of Kahoot settings and options here.
There are two Presenter-led modes available: Classic mode (individual players) and Team mode. For this example, we will be running in Classic mode.
If you wish to run your Kahoot in Team mode, you will need to set up your teams prior to starting your Kahoot (Link to: How to create a group)
Select Classic mode.
- Kahoot will provide you with a page with login details for your quiz.
- Players cannot join a live game until the presenter has started the game.
- The game can also be locked by clicking the padlock next to the start button.
- Note: New login details such as the Game PIN and QR code are generated with each quiz you run.
You cannot use a previous game login
Each time you run a Kahoot quiz you will need to create a unique PIN, link and QR code to share with your class.
Sharing the quiz PIN, link or QR code
Share the Kahoot game details (Game PIN, web address, QR code) with your students, giving them a few minutes to join and log in from their laptops, iPads, or phones.
In the classroom
- Display the link, PIN and QR code via the screen in the classroom – students can access the QR code using their mobile phones.
- Add the link, PIN and QR code to the Announcements page in Blackboard.
- Direct students to open a browser and enter: https://kahoot.it/
Online
- As above, screenshare the PIN, Link and QR code.
- Send the link details via chat in Zoom or Collaborate Ultra.
- Students can open a browser window and type the address: kahoot.it
- Students may also install the Kahoot app on their phone or device.
Teachers
- In the bottom right corner, you will see a counter showing how many students have signed in.
- Switch to full screen mode, click on the screen mode icon again to return to your regular screen view (optional).
- For more on the settings menu, click here.
Direct your students
- Open a browser (recommended) and type the address: kahoot.it
- Enter the Game PIN code at the login screen:
- If Nicknames have been enabled students can tap spin for a random nickname to be assigned.
- Select Spin (you get a couple of turns), then Ok, go!
Game play
- As the host, you can control the quiz, or let it run automatically.
- Game points are allocated for correct answers and speed.
- Remember when setting up your quiz, you can adjust the timing of questions.
- If you find a question needs more time, or timing is too long, go back and adjust the individual questions.
The winner!
- The winner of each quiz round is rewarded and acknowledged at the end of each quiz. (Tip: students love this and can become quite competitive!)
- The results of the completed quiz can be collected via the Report tab, located on the Kahoot Home page.
- Reporting can be used to identify any gaps in knowledge and areas that need review – take advantage of the reports available and review any concepts with your students in the following workshop or tutorial.
- Offer to run the quiz again if your students are feeling competitive. Repetition will solidify learning.
